I'm currently gripless since i love how the 50D feels in my hands. It's slightly bigger then the rebel bodies so it fits my hands perfectly. I don't use the grip alot due to the weight and the custom functions i set on the camera. The vertical grip doesn't have the AF button i use to auto-focus unless i swap the FEL with AF-ON in settings. I only use it when i know i'll be doing alot of vertical shots that day. It'll stay at home majority of the time.

But back when i used to have a Xsi. I absolutely loved my grip and refuse to take it off. I guess i just have big hands, the camera feels "complete" with the grip. My pinkie doens't dangle anymore in midair.

@ Chantal- I had a Opteka grip for my Xsi, the build is excellent.. and for about $70 USD, it also comes with two additional opteka batteries for the camera. Those batteries are great and even outlasts the OEM Canon ones.

Edit:
Just looked thru my album.. i still have the pictures i took of the Xsi when i put it on craigslist.

This is the grip i'm talking about.

Installed on the body.

The build of that thing is very similar to the Canon BG-E5N grip that i have now for the 50D.

I LOVE my batterygrip! Great for vertical shooting, and I like the extra grip (For my big Viking hands xD) . :D

What kind of stereotype is that? :p
I am pretty sure not all Scandinavians have enormous hands that are made for pillaging and smashing skulls ;)
haha in fact I have quite a lot of Swedish guys who are regularly in touch with their feminine sides :D

I think larger cameras like the 50D, 7D and 5D are perfect for normal sized hands without grips though the same can't be said about the Rebels which is why I chose the 50D after comparing it to T2i at the camera store

I don't know where you guys buy your grips but in Canada the price for a Canon battery grip for Rebel XSI should be less than 240 bucks and less than 350 for a grip for the 5Dmk2. I have seen BestBuy selling third party grips for XTI for around 150 but that was last year...

no :( but I did now.

I'm not gonna answer cuz you hurt me feelings

I can do a comparison between the 135L and 100L macro if you like. I have a set of 3 extension tubes that I can slap on, I'll even install the 1.4x and see how much that improves.

haha awww that thing is so cute!

I'm not the biggest guy in the world but I couldn't live without the grip on my 5d. Everything I could need is in thumbs reach; ISO, Shutter, Aperture, Focus points. It's how it should of been made. I tend to carry it by the grip if it's not slung over my shoulder or on the ground.

There isn't enough button on the BG-E5N grip :(

I don't like how it's setup from the factory where you af, meter and shutter all on one button.. I separate all of them :/ and with them spread out, i don't have enought buttons on the grip! T_T

Why do you need so many buttons man? AF is a half depression, shows your exposure, quickly adjust, then full depress. Done in under a second haha

I hate that stupid AV button on the smaller cameras. The wheel is so much better I don't even know where to begin.

ISO/Aperture/Shutter/Focal Points = Lets rock. The rest of the functions are useless really.

Well i usually start out by metering the scene, be it evaluative, spot, or partial etc with exposure compensation.. lock the exposure and then compose the image then AF onto my subject and then voila.. shutter.

I'm slowly re-assigning the buttons so now half depression on the shutter = metering only.. i meter the scene then recompose.. AF then shutter.

With the camera's defaulting metering and AF at half depression, i don't have full control over things. (aka sometimes i recompose and miss my focus)

I only use the in camera spot meter, can't remember using anything else. But for some reason I always need to push 2/3rds of a stop on my 5d to expose correctly. It's not a very accurate meter. For landscapes and in the studio, I always use a light meter, I trust this more than anything. For everything else, I always check the histogram (but even these aren't 100%)

I also use AI servo and play a lot with my focal points. Can't say I've really ever missed a shot this way.

Your processes sounds like there is too going through your head lol

Haha, my in-camera meter overexposes.. I need to underexpose it -2/3 stops regularly. Sucks i don't have the funds to throw down $300 for a decent lightmeter.

I dunno about it being complicated now that i'm used to it... i picked up this tip from a photographer i met when i was out shooting.. it was hard getting used to but i could definitely see the benefit of separating the AF and meter from the shutter button once he explained it to me.

As for the image.. i almost always take a test shot, and look and the histogram, sometimes i get it spot on.. but most of the time i need to take another exposure (if it's a new scene/ subject).. Hopefully one day.. i can get it right the first try.. Hopefully :D

180, wow it's like 200 dollars here O_o but ya, I feel the exact same thing.... 200 dollars for a battery grip? I am poor.

I saw other battery grips for other cameras and they were like 400 dollars and up

Thanks, it's called phottix battery grip I just google that?

I guess I should be happy about my camera deal then...
When I was shopping for used xsi, my choices came down to one with the 2 kit lenses for 600$, or one with only one kit lens, 3 batteries and the grip for 500 $.....
I went for the 500 $ deal cause that was all I could spend...
