As I said it all depends on how much you are willing to spend on equipment not if you want to become pro or not. I know right now I can spend quite a lot of money on camera equipment because I have two jobs and don't really have a life but I know it will be different next year course I will try to get a car and most probably hang out with friends a lot more which I consider a lot more important than getting camera equipment. I am sorry that you lost such expensive items but I hope that unfortunate event will not keep you from getting decent cameras and lenses in the future

@Antichrist: I have read about those manual lenses in the Canon digital photography forums and I have seen some really awesome and sharp images taken with them but I don't think they are any good for those kind of photos I want to use them for which are mainly pets and portraits

-better doesnt mean better for you, everyones different, a great lens doesnt guarantee that you will be good with it or like it or are comfortable with it.
and dont underestimate shitty either.
some of the worst or limited resources can truely test your skills, and even surprise the supposedly better performance things.
its not all about the best equipment you can get, its more than that.
and your friend is lucky, but its very common in all sorts of fields.
there are kids who havent even started first grade yet and they have talent better than a lot of people much older than them.
Well I am not sure about others but I for one definitely started to put more effort in taking photos after I bought a better lens and it also made me or shall I say forced me to shoot in RAW only lol
and I am definitely not saying that if you have shitty equipment you wouldn't be able to take good photos I mean just look at MotherOfTwo here....
