Understanding DoF and shutter speed doesn't take a genius, it's when it's combined with ASA, granularity, push and pull processing that it starts to get hard.

Any idiot can understand how a digicam works.

Well i dont see why photography has to be complicated to be fun or interesting. If photography is accessible to more people thats only positive in my opionion. But thats okay, i see your point..

It doesn't have to be complicated, but people who've never shot film don't appreciate how much easier things are for them. Also, film is an amazing medium to work with, and if you're serious about photography, you should definitely dabble in it.

one that annoys me is people buying a decent Slr camera and just shooting on full auto, not actually learning how to use it properly

Well, it is unlikely that you will be able to make enough money off of it. I am speaking statistically of course...

Code
Statistics show that for a photographer in 2002 the average annual salary was $24,040. The lowest 10% earned less than $14,640, the middle 50% between $17,740 and $34,910 while the highest 10% earned upwards of $49,920. For a photographer employed by a newspaper or periodical the average annual salary was $31,460, while in other professional and scientific services the average was $21,860.

(Source : www.bls.gov )

I'm not saying this to discourage you, just saying it to really show that if you want to make it as a photographer - you will need to try reaaalllllly hard. Or do it as a hobby / side job.

As far as my pet peeve....
I hate really "artsy" pictures. Things like "I took a picture of a cardboard box and the lighting was kinda shitty...but made it black and white so now its really damn cool"

Having gone to an art museum a few days ago, I found things that really grind my gears. A small square on a large canvas. How exciting. But that picture was getting the majority of attention from the crowd.
However the picture of a large, incredibly detailed and well presented cityscape got no glances. I guess looking at it just because it is weird is one thing, but actually saying that the square took talent / skill / time is comical.

I know a lot of photographers who make over $50K/year, and some even who make over $100K.
Depends what you are doing in the photography business.

Sure, but it is an average figure, so obviously there're some people that earn more than the average.

How does one "understand" art?
Art is about the feeling or mood and there is no right and wrong....right?
So please, let me know how to understand art without using words that are feelings. (And think about your answer before you type it next time)

Also, about the film vs. digital argument... My parent's wedding was shot by a "pro" with a film camera many years ago. After developing the film, the guy found that only 1 picture turned out that was almost usable. Now they have 1 picture of their wedding day and it is a shitty picture at that. Now wouldn't this have been easily avoided using the advances in technology?
That and everyone is just complaining using the "When I was your age, we had to walk 20 miles to get to school" argument. Why walk when you can ride the bus?

Because, art should be about feeling, it shouldn't just be about what's best technically or even visually. Sure, a nice photo can be more visually and technically interesting than a square painted on a canvas, but atleast the canvas is thought provoking, and that's what matters in art.

This "pro" obviously wasn't all that professional then, was he ;)
Most pro's I know would take 2-3 cameras with them on a shoot, if the film is ruined it's most likely something like a light leak, which means this pro doesn't know how to check his cameras are in working order or look after them.

I hate when I adjust the focus point, and then forget it and then an animal is nearby and I can not get a photo. :(
