A simple filter to protect the lense would probably be a UV filter, they dont do so much but you can use it as a protection. But i can recommend you to buy a Polarizing filter and/or graduated Neutral density filter, both of them are very useful. If i had access to my own computer i could upload some example pictures...

Btw yes you will need a 77mm one, but investing in some nice filters is worth the money.
Okay. I'll consider the UV Filter. Hehe, you are right, they are higher up in price. I at least want one to protect it and I'll worry about other filters later on. After all, this is already an expensive enough lens for me as it is haha. I'm really new to filters and such so I don't know what kinds of effects they give off. I know I do like my polarizer one I have now with the kit lens.

Yea one thing you should remember with so big filter size is that its worth more to use better quality filter on those, because better quality filters are thinner. Thinner filter help on big filter size more because when u look at the corners from the middle of the lens it will look more thicker from there, and normal quality filter might not look so good on the corners.
I'm not sure I quite understand? A UV filter is just an ordinary filter, or are there better UV filters out there? Or are you referring this to the other filters? lol Confused!
