thats why i love you, you have inspired me already
(even though the most you mentioned do not exist here in dubai)

Thanks bro but I'm sure there are a million other things to shoot in Dubai. Shoot architecture?

I was only there briefly last year but it looked beautiful..

I would post more I guess, if all I was shooting wasn't only horses and people with horses.... I made a specialty out of it and people are paying me for what I do, which suits me fine ofc :p
But after a few horses you would all start to be bored and ask me to shoot something else.... but as of now I'm a few months backed up in my post processing for the shows and don,t have time to go around shooting anything else......
Those who have my Facebook account can see what I do but here I must upload on Flickr first then make a topic..... I may sound lazy but sometimes I just don't have the leasure time to do so.....
Maybe this winter things will slow down....

Would be cool to see a photo essay on a horse show, you know, photojournalistic behind the scenes sort of stuff :)

I am just back from Oklahoma City where I was sent by one of the Quebec horse association to follow our Quebec riders, take photos of them in action (barrel racing) and post them on FB for exposure..... it was a great experience and as I said, people on FB will see it, but I really don't have the leasure time to upload it all to post a lot here....
Plus the light was aweful (indoor, no flash and horses going at full speed)

I did a nice photoshoot just before my trip and I'll post a couple photos, gray horse in the snow.... was beautiful!

So, I bought a 50 1.4 while I was here, the day before a fashion shoot mind you.
Shot nearly 50% on it.
Import everything into lightroom.
Nearly every shot was slightly soft, off or mis focused.
Mind you, I never went under f2.8.
And every other shot on the 24/85 were razor.
Was mad.
Went back to the store.
The guy said he was kind of expecting me back with the lens. Wtf.
Tell him I want a refund/exchange/credit.
Ended up testing 5 other samples of the same lens with a lens chart in the store.
The sharpest one turned out to be the demo model on the shelf.
Happy days.
Although I still need to bracket focus with this lens if the light is iffy.
So 3-4 shots of the same frame, AF on, shutter, AF on something else then back again. Repeat 4 times.

Moral of the story: Go into the shop, with your camera body, and test every single one of the lenses they have at 1.4 on a focus chart.

Bokeh is longer lasting fad. It will die down just like cross processing and hdr have ;)

Lol omg, I cant believe he said that. He couldnt have warned you about the issues while you were there?

Ive heard that sometimes you have to send your lenses out to be calibrated to your camera specifically? Maybe that could have helped. That sucks though.

What store did you go to? Unfortunately the only store around here is Best Buy, I doubt they have a chart and their selection is shit. Thats why I always order through Adorama. I dont get to test the stuff, but I trust them.

Well for now, I love it  At least I never got caught up in selective coloring, right? Let me have my bokeh!

Heres one of my favorite recent shots:

But look at the price difference, haha. Until I have a steady stream of clients I cant really buy the best (or even close to it, really) gear. Also my main lens is the 50mm 1.8, so Id really like to get something I can open wider, get that super awesome bokeh.[/B]

If live in the states I believe you can get the much better 50mm f1.4 for less than 300 bucks. I have the older 50mm f1.8 with metal mount and distance scale but I have never used it simply because I find my f2.8 zoom adequate most of the time and I just hate the slow and noisy AF of that lens. I think you are going to love the 24-70mm f2.8 if you are making money by shooting portraits.

That sounds almost like the Sigma 50mm f1.4. I have heard that you really need to be very lucky to get a good copy of that lens and those who actually have a good copy love it

If she is shooting with the newer higher end Canon cameras like the 5Dmk2 and mk3 or 7D she should be able to adjust the AF accuracy.

hmm it may still take awhile for them to come up with software that would actually make bokeh irrelevant and also with large aperture lenses you can stop action in low light :p
subject isolation should be considered very important in many situations. So what is your opinion on those tilt shift lenses? I have been eying them for quite awhile but it seems that a tripod is a must when shooting with those lenses and I don't want to walk around with some damn tripod all the time :D

It wasn't that particular lens, it's the Canon 50 1.4 in general, it's hard to find a keeper.

I wasn't going to send it off, I live in a foreign country where coming across english speakers is 50/50 ha

He was really cool and I was surprised he went to so much effort with me.

Sorry but the bokeh thing does nothing for me haha :D

I have a 1ds III and tried micro adjusting but there's nothing you can do about a lens that is simply soft!

Tilt shift is very niche..

17/24/45 are basically for architecture/landscape, couldn't imagine shooting too many "portraits" with them. 45 could be cool...

90 is great from what I've seen for food and still life. Also great with portraits to mimic MF/LF front or rear standard focal plane shift. Same with 45 of course.

Ah, good to know. Its weird to me that third party lenses can be better.

Its like you have no soul :(

Got back from my session not too long ago, the girls I shot were so damn cute. Awkward moment though, Im asking the two year old what shes doing and the six year old pipes up, "I think shes wondering what that is on your tongue!"..I have a piercing, haha.

lol chantal you sound butthurt. i myself just too busy with work and most of it i find boring to share.

rly should find some time to shoot off work.

My butt doesn't hurt... but I was disappointed in the direction this place went. I never really expressed my butt hurt feelings till now.

I too want to take more pictures, just for the sake of enjoying it. I don't know what made me lose it... I do have lots of ideas in my head, things I'd like an opportunity to shoot.

I'm not sure if it's the whole talk about photography that ruined it for me, all the hardcore people out there... I guess I'm just not that hardcore like the rest of em. I just shoot when I feel like it, and learn new things when I feel like it. I think it was more fun when I was noob to the DSLR world. Now THAT was exciting... it was those simple little things that made it fun. Now I gotta try and wrap my head around complicated editing processes and equipment and all those detailed things... I am not sure I am liking it at this time. All the talk about lenses and stuff, I don't even care to read words talking about gear unless I am interested in buying it or use it myself... in which can't happen right now. Just at a different place in my life, I think. I would like to experiment/try new lenses, but my mind is elsewhere, and my purchases are other things.
