My friend and I are building a studio and I don't know anything about it.
We have around 1000$ budget for the lights and everything else. What would be the best to start in your opinions?
Any help is welcome!

get 2 strobes with accessories, for beginning is enough any strobes from eebay which are really cheap. later on you can get to higher setup. I started with one light from czech company fomei and one flash (SB800 it was I believe) and now I have Bowens setup with Explorer, ringflash and 3 strobe heads. Never used all of it, maximum I used was 3 strobes at once, also very nice results are from flash + strobe. Don't listen about WB, we have RAW :)

This is flash+strobe example: http://www.fotopatracka.cz/users/elmagico_7930/P1304909419.jpg
This is pure flash, only one: http://www.fotopatracka.cz/users/elmagico_7930/P1310146006.jpg

So forget about all this, first try to play with 1-2 lights, then when you get budget, you can get new or more sophisticated lighting equipment.

Or get continuous light, which is good solution too, I know several fashion photographers who use only continuous lights and results are above expectance. Go for LED lights in this case and you're OK. Like these or smaller kits: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/709555-REG/Ikan_ID500_KIT_ID_500_LED_3_Light.html

Well not when you need to overpower the sun. Im just saying that you can be far more flexible with studio strobes rather then hotshoe flashes.

+1 but a single pack and head will kill his budget.

I love elinchrom, they are the best lights I have ever used so I can't comment on profoto as I haven't used them.

The Rangers are an amazing portable flash. Wouldn't even bother with speedlights.

i am the other way around, have used profoto, found them to be really good
but for my needs (portability being the main 1) i will certainly go with speedlights, especially seeing as studio shoots would be very few and far between
