I'd take the D700 if you're not planning to make money with it. D700 does not have enough mega pixels :)

What you mean? That is good for general porpous and the lack of mega pixels is only important for professional scopes? Sry if I ask but English is not my first language :D

This article explains it pretty well

Buy the Canon 5D Mark II if you need 21 MP and full HD video capture capabilities.

Get the Nikon D700 is you need professional-grade autofocus, fast operational speed, shorter shutter lag and viewfinder blackout, 8 fps (with the optional MB-D10 battery grip), Nikon CLS, excellent build and weather sealing.

in other words, get the D700

100 macro planar is only reaching 1:2, gozu image quality, but too low magnification imo.
They speak well of the 50 macro f2 from Zeiss and also a good walk around lens.

Anyway manual focus is hard with animated subjects, so for flowers no problem, but continuous AF with insects help a lot.

12-24 is too big! I had sold 2 days ago my 16-35, I prefer fix focal lenses, as in the end you use this kind of zoom only at extremes and you have e heavier package.

Ah I didn't know that. I thought a 1800 dollar lens would at least have 1:1 magnification
but you are right the fantastic image quality is undeniable. Well there is also this new 35mm f1.4
I have the Canon version and I am not very impressed by it's performance wide open due to the
large amount of CA but that could be a user error
Personally I choose primes mainly for their larger apertures but I just can't ignore the convenience of
the zooms especially I am one of those who don't like to change lenses too often :D Canon has a few
excellent zoom lenses like the 24-70 f2.8L, 70-200 f2.8 IS II and the new 70-300L looks promising too.

Are you saying the 14-24 is too wide? lol I've found my current Sigma 10-20 lens not wide enough in some situations
and it's 16mm on a 1.6x crop. There is also a Sigma 12-24 but I have heard it produces huge amount of flares when
having a bright light source in or just outside of the frame.

I have seen wedding photographers using the D700 and D3 so unless you plan on printing really really large prints
it's 12 mpixel sensor should be more than enough. If you are into MF lenses Canon has the advantage in being able
to use Nikon lenses with an adapter which for some reason Nikons can't.

no no I meant that you can't use Canon lenses on Nikon bodies only the other way around.
That's another advantage the 5D offers. Canon may not have the large amount of high quality ultra wide lenses offered by Nikon but with an adapter
you can just use Nikons on a Canon :D

Nikon doesn't have the need to use Canon glass. :D
