for some cases you do need a flash and most the time its good to have because you use really high f-numbers when macroing usually like f-22 and when you use 105mm lens in 1.6x crop body you need around 1/160 sec shutterspeed and when shooting up close you should use even faster shutterspeed or a tripod because small movement looks big when you look it really close. but on direct sunlight you should be ok without tripod or a flash. i havent shot 1:1 macro more than few shots(and that wasnt serious shooting), but iv read about it quite alot. you should check some videos at youtube

i think if im indoors ill have to use the flash, i dont have any good source of lighting inside. :(
