It has joystick for af point selection, with those cameras you need to push af selection button and then find the right one using the shutterspeed wheel. On 40d you choose the f-number from the wheel, instead of pushing some button and using the same wheel again. Allso iso choosing is easier on 40d since you can do it without looking out the viewfinder. So using it is much easier. I dont think there is loads of more features on 40d than on 400d for example, 40d is just made faster to use and the features made better than on 400d

well the d40-60 are much ez'er to use because they tell you wat you are doing wrong, tell you what you are doing right. it shows you the aperture opening and closeing on the rear screen and it shows you the position of the main selector as you turn it on the main screen.

As to the features of the canon cameras -

400D: 11 custom functions
40D: 24 custom functions

Plus the 400D has its light weight and compact size going for it.
But the Nikon's have the teaching features going for them

The manual says what the right thing to do is with 40d. It took few hours to figure out how to use full manual mode when i first got the 400d, so screw those teaching things on cheap nikons. Having more custom functions doesent mean the camera would take longer time to learn how to use it

lmao have to agree with you. It's much more fun learning on your own and gaining experience by shooting pictures than reading or learning from the menu biggrin.gif

agree with you here. I have used it and I LOVE it and they are so freaking cheap now too. If I ever going to buy a second digital camera its going to the XTI smile.gif

why get a 400D when there's also the possibility of getting the 450D with that price?

got mine yesterday - 530 alltogether with a 18-55mm lens

Thanks for all the help guys.
I just looked up the 400D on Canon's site and the "cons" said:
Quote
a point and shoot is much cheaper (1) bad inside ok outdoors (1) doe snto perform as well as p&s indoors (1) over all qc not there (1) poor balance with zoom lens (1)
smaller body is not as comfortable to hold. (1) zoom could stand to go a bit farther (1)

Are these things true?
And how much do 18-55mm lens cost?
Because I can only find it with the body.

lol what a load of horse crap, no offense
but none of those mentioned "cons" is true. I have used the 400D indoor and I have seen photos taken by it and they are faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar better than any indoor shots I have seen taken by any point and shoot even with the crappy 18-55 lens. The smaller body compared to 40D/50D and pro cameras can be an advantage sometimes especially when you travel a lot or at a party besides it's not that small unless your hands are huge like those belonging to a caveman biggrin.gif

about the cost. I have seen XTI/400D body being sold for 400 Canadian dollars and you can probably get the kit lens 50 bucks used or pay 100 dollars for a new 18-55 with IS

in eu the canon 450D is the best buy because of the cashback offer

but in the us the xti is best because of the huge price differance

there isnt a lot of differences between the two cameras.
the 450D has a dedicated ISO button, live view, 12MP and a very slight improvement on image quality.

The kit lens is extremely expensive when bought alone £110 which is silly. You can either get it with the camera or get the body and 50mm. I got my 450d with the kit lens, and am now forced to go get the 50mm. that kit lens should only be used at wide angle imo because it lets little light in.

So should I not buy a 18-55? And what do you mean by "with IS", insurance lol?

So if the kit lens isn't good what lens should I try to get?
I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the Canon Rebel XTi 400D unless people say otherwise ;x

I found the 400D on B&H Photo/Video
Is this a bad price?

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/457506-REG/Canon_1236B002_EOS_Digital_Rebel_XTi.html

And is it bad to buy a used camera?
It doesn't come with a lens though, and all the lenses I see are like $200 :\
Am I looking in the wrong place or something?
Can someone help me find a decent lens for cheaper?
