Dude, you will shit yourself at the quality when you play this stuff.

Fuck, I started on a k1000, there weren't even any digital slrs then.

ME back then if I had a 6d:

I do enjoy shitting myself quite a bit. You've sold me.

I still do shit myself over tech talk and buying new goodies. And learning new things. So that leaves me contemplating my lens choices right off the bat. :) I want to be suuuuper careful about my first few lenses, since they might be my only lenses for a year or so, and I have some beautiful places to take pictures where I live.

you will be amazed by the 24-105, yeah its not as good as the 24-70, but its still brilliant and covers a better range

Don't tell him that because he will think he needs it when in reality it won't make a shit of difference in the beginning ;)

Hahaha, I've already heard it, and it has led me to do hours and hours of research... probably in those hours of research, I could've paid off the lens by simply working a minimum wage job :-/

I both lack and have too much in both categories. I have about $8k in the bank, I work a shit job, I'm a student, but I don't have a lot of expenses (school is paid for, rent is non-existent, food is paid for... although taking my gf out, car insurance, gas, etc, are not paid for -- so overall, I have cash to dump into hobbies). But yeh... I'm still taking steps back and thinking about the purchase before making it. $2400 is a lot to dump into a first DSLR + lens.

The differences I've seen aren't too distinct. I noticed some comparison photos the 24-105 had washed out colors compared side-by-side with the 24-70... but that seems like the reviewer's fault? Was odd. Anyway, the 24-105mm seems to cover a better range for sure, and the 24-70 seems a tad bit heavy for a carry-around, plus its range is so limited that I've read in a lot of reviews that primes seem to really replace it in a lot of instances. It's a carry-around, and for carry-around, the 24-105mm seems to win for my purposes.

That said, I don't know what I'm talking about... well... I only know what I'm talking about in theory, which is worth very little haha.

8k in the bank? If I had that at your age I'd be traveling the world not fucking around with gadgets ;) (assuming your are ~18-21)

Washed out-Smoshed out. Anything can be corrected in post. I shoot fashion editorials and portraits with non L primes (50/85). I've never had a complaint about colour. These reviewers are neck beards. You're a computer dude.. it's like comparing a 770 to a 780.. They will both max anything at 1080p but the 780 has more grunt for a lot more. The difference is redundant in the real world. But for neckbeards it's everything.

That's something I've got to fix about myself: I take the neckbeard approach to buying stuff (I go overboard and I'm too picky). A month or so after my purchase, I'm a realistic consumer and I look at my past self like an idiot. Every time. Although, I don't regret going for the best a lot of the time.

Thanks for the input and the help :) It all makes sense to me.

I'm 24 in October. I'd travel the world (really just Europe and at least one visit to Hawaii to be honest) but I think that will wait for 2-5 more years. I've already tossed $2k at a piano last year, $2k at an audio system, etc... I toss money around like a fool, but I get things that last at least and resale value is always top notch >_<; Though, I have nothing (except my laptop) that I want to sell now. SSD's were a waste of cash (830 pro and 840... I don't feel the difference even in photoshop).

I'll probably bug you with more questions. I may want to get one more lens depending on how the 24-105mm performs. I'm certain it will be great and exceed my ridiculous expectations anyway.

haha man, take your new camera/lens and spend that money traveling Europe for a few months. And do it while your young, I waited to long to get off my ass and see the world, and i regret blowing money on shit like cars/toys/girls/partying.

SSD for me are a god send, I couldn't live without it ha

I should ask a beginner question:

How would the 24-105mm USM L IS lens compare to a 50mm 1.4 lens? Both at 50mm.

I realize which is the winner of course, but more-so I'm wondering by how much in all practicality.

You've pretty much talked me into just getting the 24-105mm to start.

Welllll at least after a camera, the only things that I'd ever want are small purchases. Most expensive stuff would be small purchases and clothing, so saving is very possible haha.

You're right. I have been trying to live in the day more often rather than waiting for uni to be over with and hoping life gets more fun later on.

50mm is one limited focal length. It is 3 stops faster. Half the size. Lighter. Nicer for portraits. Inconspicuous.

Living in the day is just getting up and doing it. Sounds like you're living in the future. Have fun when you want. But the type of fun that leaves an imprint on you for the rest of your life.
