The shots you edited Marie, I do like the first one a lot better than the rest! I guess I'm not an over blown fan

I think those black and white conversions are quite flat and severely lacking in contrast :/

This is how I would do it in black and white, but I think it's just how I prefer my black and white images.

It's still quite "grey"

The beauty of black and white film is that it creates smooth local contrast across the midtones, not just creating contrast between shadow and highlight. That is the trick in reproducing the black and white film look.

Would you mind editing her picture to show us as an example? I'd like to get better processing black and white. I haven't done black and white film in over 8 years. =-\ So, sadly, I've forgotten a lot.

To be honest, I started with this, lol. But I went against my gut and felt like the pants and boots were too dark. So I lightened it.

But yeah, I definitely like the black and white better that way.

I did not edit them, those are just presets from an add-on program to LR 4, called Silver Effex Pro 2
I picked 5 that I thought would fit better with the photo, to my own taste, and did not edit them after that.
They are also in very low res.
It was only to show an exemple to Xan of that program I use.

The reason why I prefer the lighter ones is because of the subject.
These are children, anything too dark conflicts with the joyful nature of the photo, in my opinion ofc :)
