Plus your photos should be out for everyone to see, not hidden in pm's :P.

10k, holy shit O.o Against liths advice I really want the rokinon 85mm 1.4. Im getting something decent at tax time but I still havent decided yet, every time I think I have I read some piece of advice that makes me think differently

It's just how I roll :P

I just don't believe in buying a permanent manual focus lens for a DSLR

Yeah maybe that was me, I remember telling people a landscape isn't a sunset with everything else black. Not sure if that sunk in or helped anyone.

I rather give people advice or share work over PM to be honest.

Haven't seen eek in ages and onepage doesn't shoot anymore.

well it must have been you then. so thanks for the advice :D
It does make sense though I mean a landscape shot should also have visible landscape in it

talking about gear etc, i really want the 200-400 f4 1.4converter lens (when it finally comes out) but at an estimated $10k i guess i gotta wait

wow and I thought I was crazy enough to order a 6.3k lens. Well I have heard the new 200-400 1.4x is more like 1.1k :D
but personally prefer those f2.8 super telephotos and for that amount of money you might as well get the 400mm f2.8L IS II :p

I have heard a lot of good things about the Sigma 85mm f1.4. It cost half as much as the Canon f1.2 and focuses much faster

I recommended the 1.8. Fast focus and damn sharp at 1.8.

Pfft, damn moody artists.

Even at that price and quality?

But look at the price difference, haha. Until I have a steady stream of clients I cant really buy the best (or even close to it, really) gear. Also my main lens is the 50mm 1.8, so Id really like to get something I can open wider, get that super awesome bokeh.

With the accuracy of AF systems on cameras these days manual focus is kind of counter productive. I couldn't imagine going back to manual focus, it's just too inaccurate :/

The 85 1.8 is fine. I use it and the results it produces are great. The 1.2 is over rated, like some other Canon L lenses.

I wouldn't get so hung up over bokeh. Plus shooting at 1.2 is hit and miss. The 85L and 50L don't mind missing/hunting ;)

Ever tried to talk to people and get "nah nah nah nah" with fingers in the ears... ?

My opinion/advice is only valid because I've made so many mistakes and learned from them in the last ~10 years, I can help and am happy to with people who genuinely gives a shit!

You just need to find a project to shoot. I found when I was much younger I got bored of photography if I would just go out and take pictures of random things. If you have a concept about a series of images you want to create, your photography becomes much more enjoyable.

The problem people have is that they expect to get better by just "taking random pictures" Yeah, technically, but what's the point if the rest of the image is garbage? Flowers and pets are nice, but boring as hell and aren't even worth time acknowledging here. As I said just now, and plenty of times in the past here, there is a concept, a story, a thought process behind every photo and every series one makes.

There are a million that come to mind that anyone here can shoot..

Series on:
Stray animals in your neighborhood/animal shelters/pounds
Abandoned shops and workplaces in your area
Elderly people in the street
LIGHT (sunsets/sunrise/diffracted light from glass/how light reacts in the local streets/shadows)
Do a story on your locally owned pizza shop (not a chain). Go in and ask them if you can do some documentary type shots for a project. Take 6 awesome images. Establishment shot (maybe of the building), portraits of the owners/chefs, details, action, people eating, then an empty restaurant at night. It's easy!
It's winter for all of us.. Go out of your comfort zone, get out in the cold, go for a hike, take the car to the middle of nowhere, hitch a ride, who care.. take your camera and ONE prime lens, a ~50mm and shoot the landscape around you. Distant shots, wide shots, closeups. Keep the same focal length though.

And that's just off the top of my head.. Get creative people. Do visual research. Get off those silly equipment forums. Buy magazines, get visually stimulated. You are all stagnating. Take risks. Try things. If you fuck up, you've learned something. If you kill it, great success but you've still learned something.

thats why i love you, you have inspired me already
(even though the most you mentioned do not exist here in dubai)

no i always go for versatility in a lens and the 200-560mm is perfectly suited to wildlife
i have used the 400 f2.8, its amazing but doesnt suite me

After talking to you Ive been using AF more, actually. It seems to work well most of the time, but sometimes Im just like..what were you trying to focus on, Mark?

I dont think Ill ever go for a 1.2 anything. If I ever upgrade my 50 Ill just go to the 1.4..Im happy with the sharpness on my 1.8 so I cant imagine paying the outrageous price for the 1.2.

Eh, I love bokeh. The client base Im going for/that I have currently loves bokeh..so its a big deal to me.

The smoother and more colorful the better, bokeh makes me happy.

So, I bought a 50 1.4 while I was here, the day before a fashion shoot mind you.
Shot nearly 50% on it.
Import everything into lightroom.
Nearly every shot was slightly soft, off or mis focused.
Mind you, I never went under f2.8.
And every other shot on the 24/85 were razor.
Was mad.
Went back to the store.
The guy said he was kind of expecting me back with the lens. Wtf.
Tell him I want a refund/exchange/credit.
Ended up testing 5 other samples of the same lens with a lens chart in the store.
The sharpest one turned out to be the demo model on the shelf.
Happy days.
Although I still need to bracket focus with this lens if the light is iffy.
So 3-4 shots of the same frame, AF on, shutter, AF on something else then back again. Repeat 4 times.

Moral of the story: Go into the shop, with your camera body, and test every single one of the lenses they have at 1.4 on a focus chart.

Bokeh is longer lasting fad. It will die down just like cross processing and hdr have ;)
