Someone has my flippers!
Truth be told, before you get all the fancy equipment, take a few classes on photography in general.
IMO it's not worthwhile to buy a nice strobe, housing, and camera without knowing everything there is to know about
underwater photography (adjusting for lighting, manual focus, color correction (photoshop), distortion correction, and most importantly... good composition!)
Although, I shouldn't talk. I'm in Maui right now about to use my friend's dad's
5D MK II lol
edit: Also, if you know the guy in picture 3 personally, he should wear his dive knife on the inside of his leg, not the outside.
If he ever goes to monterey (point lobos) or some other seaweed jungle, his knife is going to get caught and do more harm than good.
I don't know that guy, he was just a random dude I dived with on a holiday, but the dive knife was not the only improperly placed equipment he had

(dangling computer + I'm not a fan of jackets and split fins either). The whole team was a disaster actually but that is another story

It's true that I don't know much about photography in general, but classes are very expensive and I believe general photography wouldn't be much of a help underwater, especially at my level. I've looked into some basic underwater photography classes, but not only are they expensive, but most of them seem to offer very little insight. Plus I just want to take a few pictures without getting seriously involved in photograpyh.
Also I already have a housing for my compact camera and I imagine a strobe and arm can be useful later on even if I decide to upgrade my gear...so it's not like I'm wasting money (apart from the question whether spending money on this hobby would be a waste of money).
thanks for the comments
