I read the topic title and I thought your daughter literally found a baby, a human baby,. Then I opened it up  and it's one of these cool bugs!

The image you don't like the quality on I think is the best one ! He's angled there perfectly looking at you. The noise isn't really in the subject but more in the background blur, doesn't bother me none.

I has questions!

Do these bugs bite? Are they harmless? I have never seen one in real life before.

haha funny!
No they don't bite at all!! But that little 8 mm critter can run!!!!
Very hard to keep them still enough to focus and press the button on the camera!
It is funny cause it stands just like a mosquito, but runs like a spider, even if it only has 4 'running legs'.
The 2 front legs are more like 'arms' that it uses to catch its prey and eat it.

They also eat hummingbirds.

DO they really? :o
The biggest mantis I've seen here is about 7 cm long (about 2 inches)... not quite big enough to get a hummingbird?

I have no idea!!!!
Ask my daughter!!
SHe said she found that one near the old pile of wood not far from the garage... and I have seen adult ones near the garden...
It's lucky for me if I see one, cause it'S not like a butterfly, one passes by and everyone sees it!
Mantis are quite discreet :D

I've seen a few around my house in my life, but none recently.

And yes, they do eat hummingbirds, or they can anyway. After they grow to about 5 to 6 inches they will sit around on the stems of plants and while the hummingbird is hovering by eating the mantis will grab it and kill it.
