i wouldnt buy from eeeebay either, but thats mainly because finnish people dont sell much stuff on eeeebay, we got our own auction websites. but still id prefer to buy from forums rather than auction sites. imo you should look for some forums and try to find seller who lives near you so you can test the camera and look for users who has sold stuff on forums alot or are old members if you need to use post. ask for sample pictures taken with the camera and pictures of the camera, ask for shutter count(maybe screen shot of shutter count program reading the camera). dunno if its an option on your post service, but at least in finland we got this option where you pay for the package when you receive it and you can have an option where you can open the box and see that what you got is working, and if it doesent work, simply dont buy it and post will send the package back to sender.
i bought my hasselblad for 500€ and 1d for 500€ and payed both in advance because sellers were old/trusted users on that forum and the option for checking the package before paying costs like 6-8 euros and i didnt think it was necessary. i bought my my 50mm 1.4 from forums also, but i met the guy in person and got to test the lens before buying. my zeiss 135mm 3.5 was bought from online too, but from auction website from trusted seller who sold alot of old lenses, and it was pretty cheap so i didnt feel any need to check the lens before buying, its a manual lens so af cant be broken and i saw pics of the lens so i knew the lenses in it were in good condition.
