Imo the measuring systems are so advanced and good, so you rarely need to use manual mode. And if you aren't happy with the metering, test shoot and use EV compensation.
I don't think manual mode is really needed for anything else then panorama shots. Or when you are shooting with a flash and you also want the ambient light.

We had this argument before regarding Av vs M...Basically I always use M if I'm flashing, otherwise it's almost 100% Av. I almost never use anything else but a lot of people use P too.

M is especially helpful for learning the camera.

Manual 100% here. Unless I'm shooting soething fast, I use Aperture priority.
