the 15-85 is a great lens for start. You can get the 7D in kit with the 15-85.
If you want cheaper and more zoom, get a 18-200.

And for the future I would add a canon 60 mm f2.8 macro or the sigma 70 mm 2.8 macro. Macros are fun lenses and very sharp, can be good portraits lenses and can catch details.

yes these are much better in image quality, but they are several thousand dollars together
