Thank you Guys,

at the moment I have only my 100 macro IS USM and I do not want to make money with my camara, just using it during trips, having fun with macros etc.

The only sport pictures I take are the ones when we go skiing/snowboarding, but again it is only for fun with friends, I think that also if the AF is worst than D700's It will be enough for my needs.

Good to hear that image quality and ISO performance of 5d II are fine.

In Italy in the web you can find 5DII for 200-250 € less than the 700, that is a good plus for me :D and Canon can mount also old Zeiss lenses adapted.

I think I will seriously consider the 5D II if the 700 won't go down with price and if no other elements will convince me.

Really? So how much is a 5Dmk2 in Italy? It's quite the opposite here in North America with the D700 being around 200 bucks cheaper.
I have heard a lot good things about Zeiss lenses even though they lack AF and have seen some really amazing shots taken with them. Which Zeiss do you have?

I have an old 50 1.4 from my contax and planning to buy a 25 2.8 (only wide lens completely compatible with 5d).

Results are cool! Also new lenses are fine, specially it seems that 21 is gozu. I like the 18 because it is very small!

I like the fact that zeiss provides cool wide lenses for canon that is famous for not being as good as nikon in this field and lack of AF in wide lenses is not that important as in teles. New ones also have focus confirmation that helps.

Here in the web you can find 5d II at 1850 - 1900 / d700 from 1900 - 2150, but from nikon european or world wide guaranty are not worth coz nikon italy provides very cool services like 3 years guaranty and fast assistance.

edit: adapters: you have focus confirmations ones at 70-100 euros and normal one for 30-50 euros, they work fine also at infinity.

If you need more info pm me and I provide you links!

I see. That's still more than what it cost here.
I am more interested in the newer ones in Canon mount especially the 100mm Macro Planar which I am trying to compare to the Canon with IS. The 21mm is almost legendary in some of the photography forums and regarded as
the best wide angle lens for Canon though it will be far from wide enough for my needs and those lenses cost even more than similar Canon pro lenses. I know the Nikon 14-24 can be used on Canons with an adapter http://www.16-9.net/nikon_g/

100 macro planar is only reaching 1:2, gozu image quality, but too low magnification imo.
They speak well of the 50 macro f2 from Zeiss and also a good walk around lens.

Anyway manual focus is hard with animated subjects, so for flowers no problem, but continuous AF with insects help a lot.

12-24 is too big! I had sold 2 days ago my 16-35, I prefer fix focal lenses, as in the end you use this kind of zoom only at extremes and you have e heavier package.

Doesn't accept half frame lenses like the d700 does (really stupid of Nikon to allow this imo)

are you serious? you know that there will be automatic crop when you insert crop lenses to it? this is really good when you want a telephoto lens and dont want to pay thousands more to get the same fov. i mean you can get 300mm crop lens for pretty cheap and it will be 450mm lens after crop, and if you want that 450mm for the full sensor it will cost like 2k$ more..

i would take the d700 over 5d mkII. d700 has enough mega pixels and what comes to colors straight out of camera without any adjustments, i photoshop anyway and you can adjust how the colors render on the camera.

Good to hear, I didn't know it was possible with Nikon. Are you sure? I was told that it is not possible due to problems with infinity focus, anyway I will look for more info.

zeiss has made lenses for many different mounts, not all of them fit to nikon, but leica r mount fits for example. but yes, more mounts fit to eos mount than nikon mount

basically the mount on the lens that is adapted has to have a larger diameter than the mount where you adapt it to, or you need an adapter with magnifying lens to allow infinity focus.

here is a list on the mount sizes:

http://www.graphics.cornell.edu/~westin/misc/mounts-by-register.html

there might be some mounts that are larger than nikon that might not fit some some other reason. there is a list somewhere that says what mounts can be adapted where that is better than this, but i couldnt find it

I'd take the D700 if you're not planning to make money with it. D700 does not have enough mega pixels :)
