i am really bad at keeping the original copies -_-
here is a similar photo i didn't like too much, just so i can get the feel of what you would have done instead. http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/5157/img5649a.jpg

Of course, post editing always is a matter of taste. but troughout the last ...... let´s say 6 months I discovered that keeping my shots rather clean and simple turns out to satisfy me much more than the dirty washed out editing I did in the past before that. nevertheless, there always will be shots that I´ll edit abit more. sometimes it just fits. but especially for portraits, I´m trying to keep it clean and simple.

check out this. was quite a quicky tbh. not the greatest photo to work with but I guess it turned out pretty cute :P
I did a little retouche aswell, simply so I dont get rusty, so you dont have to like that...... was for my own purpose.

E: now that I look at it again, I think the skin tones are a little too bright and vibrant. but meh, already closed it :D

She is not a pro, you are right! Thank you thought :) I actually like the post editing, but ofc everyone will always have their own opinion. To me, the post editing is what brought it from monotone and boring into something else much better! What sort of editing would you suggest for the photo?

also, 9/10. the photo is fantastic! i love all the detail and color on the dragonfly. only thing i am not fond of, and it is a personal preference, is imo there is too much green!

I love the composition :), nice choice of focal depth etc :)

7/10

I like the editing aside from the fact that my pretty cousin does not look like my pretty cousin anymore haha. I guess the retouches would work well for magazines and things like that.

Maybe instead of these nebulous numbers you could have some criteria. Of course, the answers are only as valid as your respect for the person doing the judging.

For example:

1) topic relevance (for photo contests that have a topic) 1-10
2) technical merit 1-10
3) composition 1-10
4) impact on the viewer, ie., how much you just like the photo despite all the other stuff. 1-20

Then it could be somewhere on the order of 3 (or 4) -50 and 50 ofc being the highest.

You could keep it at 10 max by making 1-3 above having the numerical value of rating 1-2 and the last one (4) have a rating of 1-4. = Rating 4-10 (4 being just like a 1 because you know you f*cked it up if someone is giving you a 4)

I only suggest this because it takes a bit out of the mystery as to why a certain score ... then you (the guy being judged) can look at your work and say, "ok I need to improve on composition, but technically I am there, but perhaps my subject matter is too trivial for this type of contest." ... seems more constructive to me.

Hmm.... I'm not the best person to comment on a black and white picture cause I think it is harder to get a good b/w than color...
It took me a while to see the train in there... I could see the movement so at first I assumed you were moving while taking the photo, but the fence had no movement so it didn't fit with my theory
I really don't like the train in there and I would have prefered a color version.
But on the other hand the composition is great and the lines add a lot to this picture :)
The eye follows the path to the end and this is nice :)
I'll go with a 6/10, knowing it would probably be higher without the train and in color...
Spank me if I'm off the track ;)

Here's mine:)

This was taken at sunset.

Camera Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi
Exposure 0.003 sec (1/320)
Aperture f/5.0
Focal Length 50 mm
ISO Speed 200

Post editing done (sorry I have a French version of GIMP and I don't know the English equivalent):
Some sharpening and very little contrast, gradual more dark from top to bottom, blurred the sky to get rid of some grain, added a little saturation cause lost some in the darkening process, then added the black border.

to be honest this shot doesnt appeal to me. there are several problems about shooting rainbows and cloudy, rainy skies. with a rainbow, I associate vibrant and bright colors. but the thing is, most of the times they happen when it´s cloudy and rainy as shit, and the sky darkens everything. it looks all washed out, boring and lifeless. and not in a good way. to me it´s not really appealing at all.
5/10

I´ll go ahead with some random shot. Ever noticed what cool reflections you can produce with some light and a CD ?:D
