Well, my family is into chariot racing, has been for quite a while now. Up until last winter we were using an old strip camera for the finish line shots and times. Then my father decided to buy the FinishLynx and have the chariot racing club buy the software. Then we agreed that the next year the club would pay me to run the camera every week. Then after buying and using the camera we were in contact with some people that run match races, they wanted me to come run the camera at their races. So from there on out I've been shooting horse races, both match races and chariot races. The chariot races run early Jan to early Mar, I don't really make too much money doing those, about $100 per day. Then the match races run April-Dec, thats where the money is at. Usually we make around $750 per event, and there are three events a month. Then I split the money with my dad.

Good stuff man.

$750 an event sounds pretty cheap considering the cost of the equipment involved?

Some advice to yourself and anyone in a similar situation, and this is coming out as complete honesty, keep practicing on your photographic technique before diving into photoshop. Learn composition, light and exposure. Photoshop can really distort your endeavor in creating images :/

Plus, if you are to dive into the deep end, try getting your hands on the student edition. It's a fraction of the price and is the same deal :)

Yes sir! It's still my goal so far, get it right straight from the camera. I still have a long road ahead of me in the photography world.

As for the Photoshop thing.. i don't have a .edu email anymore..

It's funny. My boss has been shooting for ~15 years and only recently have I introduced him to panoramic stitching and HDR. His photographic skills are amazing when it comes to getting it right in camera though. Slowly he's getting his head around shooting for post production.

To me it seems like a lot to me really. Perhaps because I am so new it may seem that way. But, I am basically paid to sit on a computer and push the capture button every so often. I am usually at the track for about 5 hours... So you figure that's around $150 an hour... All the camera is used for really is if a race is so close that you need to have a photo finish. So, I'm basically the photo finish guy. Then if I want to, I can make prints and sell them. Usually I don't do much of that, as it would require me to have a booth or something similar setup, and I am doing this all by myself.
