Cool mate, the 50D is a nice camera and should be a big improvement over the Xsi. Much more ergonomic! :)

I don't think it's the focus at fault here. Looks like shutter speed is the issue :/

Yeah, love it over the Xsi. After handling the 50D, the Xsi does indeed feel like a toy. I can shoot with my 50D without grip comfortably. Couldn't do the same with the rebel, the body is just too small.

And looking back on the EXIF datas.. i don't think shutter speed is the issue. Shots taken with the 50mm ƒ1.8. They were all 1/80th of a second or less with majority of them at 1/125th. Only one shot was taken at 1/60th of a second.

And with shots taken with the 100 ƒ2.8L Macro, i had H-IS turned on (good for 4 stops of IS) and i shot it with 1/80th sec :S

I dunno, i was laying flat on the floor most of the time with both of my elbows on the floor supporting the camera, so even if i do blow at handholding.. laying down flat in a stable position like that should somewhat eliminate camera shake? -_-

A gloomy day is perfect ;) This is what I mean by using window light.

In order to utilise the soft, beautiful light that trickles through a window, the subject must be standing next to the window :)

You can see a couple of examples in the horrible picture I drew in paint. You have side, profile lighting. Backlit stuff. And some fill with a reflector. There is plenty of light there available to comfortably shoot at ~400iso with a fast enough shutter speeds.

Thanks for the illustration man, i'll keep that in mind for my next shoot! I really need to pick up a cheap collapsible reflector for these types of stuff.

I wish his house was setup that way though. Window light only comes in from 1 side of the wall. Theres only 2 windows, one with which is blocked by the baby crib and the other is blocked by a love chair. :D

That's strange because it doesn't look like its a lens issue. It's blurry, not unsharp. Was the child thrashing around or not sitting still? I can shoot my 70-200 (at 200mm) @ a 1/50th with IS on and get sharp shots :/

Your focal length should roughly equal that of your shutter speed as a rule of thumb ie. 100mm = 1/100th... 50mm = 1/50th.

Do you drink a lot of coffee? :D

Reflectors are great, and they are cheap! Try and get the biggest one that fit's into your budget. I have a very large white/silver. You can get them with different bounce surfaces but I only ever use white.

Even shooting outside in overcast weather is fantastic for portraits :)

Lol, no coffee.. but alot of water/ beer. I didn't drink before the shoot nor the day before so you can rule that out. :rolleyes:

He was moving but being a 7month old kid. He doesn't move fast.. I would hope 1/125 would be suffice to stop any motion blur..

That's just weird then. My shitty kit lens I had on my 350d years and years ago was sharper :(

I use a Matin reflector. It has lived up to every task over the years, and it's quite strong and sturdy. But that was a long time ago. I'll have a look at the store mate.

Thanks for the suggestions.. They seem a little expensive though :O

I found this here with pretty good reviews. (and cheap $24) How would this work.

47" seems pretty gigantic to me. Would 32" work?

Much cheaper than retail :/

32" will get the job done, but the bigger the reflector the more coverage you will get and the more bounce with flash. The stand is pretty handy when on your own too :)

Ahh, icic. I dunno if i really do need the stand though for the time being. Being portable is big on my "requirement" list. I can always get the stand later on though!

And slow me... just realized i never gave you the link LOL.

This is the same version but bigger diameter

Also how useful is this 5-in-1. In what circumstances would i use the color color reflectors.

Silver = Bounces hard light
Gold = Bounces warm light (rarely used imo, most people use gels on their flashes, but good if only available light is useable)
White = Bounces soft light
Translucent = Diffuser for hardlight (flash/sun/etc)

Did you end up getting one?
