I dno why people are telling you to pick up nikons 50/1.8 as it got no AF-motor built-in, which you'd need for d3000.
I also have a nikon d3000, and my first buy after the kit lens was a macro lens, tamron 90/2.8, awesome one!
BUT, you should know what you want before buying, if you want to catch the detail in everyday-subjects/other stuff you
should get a macro lens, if you like to catch landscapes and that kind of stuff, a wide angle is the shit for you. A zoom is nothing I ever used so I can't help you out there.

Anyway, good LUCK with your photographing, d3000 is a nice beginner camera :)

Thats why I said the AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G or AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D's

for 200$ the only quality lens I can recommend is the 35 / 1.8 that already was recommended for you :)
I wouldnt recommend anything that isn't high quality as it changes the result so much. The whole reason to use a dslr is because of quality, right? :D

Yeah that's right, 2 persons recommended the 50/1.8 though, that's the first sign these guys got no clue, one of them even recommended 18-200 as a quality lens.
Joke of the day ^^

Yeah, really the only quality new lens you will get for that kind of money is the 35mm f/1.8. It runs at about $199. The 50mm f/1.4 runs $450ish. Assuming you have the kit lens (18-55mm VR) you really won't need a wide angle as 18mm is fairly wide. Not to mention that kit lens is surprisingly decent. The 55-200mm VR runs just over $200, ~$220-$250. I'd say having that kind of focal range is a must for general purpose type shooting. I highly suggest those two lenses for a beginner. You'd have 3 lenses that will cover most types of shooting. Like I said, highly suggest!

I guess i should keep my mouth shut for anything besides Canon, since that's what i shoot.

Honestly didn't know the 50 1.8 doesn't AF on the D3000. I was assuming it was just like the Canon 50 1.8 which AFs on any EOS body. : /

Yeah, not easy to know :)
but generally 50 is a good focal length for half body portraits etc :) (with 1,5x crop ~75)

Well at least i know now and won't run around telling ppl to buy the Nikkor 50 f/1.8 only to have them come back and ask me why doesn't AF work

50mm is a very nice focal length indeed. I love it, tho a little long indoors :P

You only can tell them that in the case that they have a d3000 or d5000...

I'm kind of new to photography, I've been taking pictures for a long time, but recently got a d3k (Nikon d3000).
My point-and-shoot digital wasn't enough anymore, and though I realize it is the artist that makes the art not the brush, so I got an upgrade.

Anyone else use this camera? What lenses would you recommend, and what do you like to shoot with it?
I'm up to anything, and sorry for lack of pictures --> I live in western PA and I've been snowed in since I got it, so I've been stuck with taking pictures of my house and the scenery ones around here aren't great.

I love that camera! :P
Very great for beginning photography.
I posted a topic with a few of my pictures taken with it.
Lists the two lenses I used.
