What is the budget you have for buying a camera?
And what do you LIKE and WANT to do with it?

Also please everyone stop putting down pictures of flowers and bugs and such.
Call me noob if you want, but bug photography is what I want to specialize in.
I love the exploring part and trying to get the best shot of spiders, for instance, in their natural surroundings.
I think it can be as difficult to shoot a wild animal as shooting a person who will not run away when you approach it.

It's a question of interest and taste.
Nothing is better or harder.
But you need to kow what you want to do and how much you can invest, before you decide on a product.

Please no more flaming, or else this topic will not be open for any more comment.

Well, if you're sticking with a camera like that, your photography level growth will be limited because you won't have as much fine control over the final photograph with regards to shutter speeds, aperture, etc, but it'll be a good way to learn about composition.

But you don't need to spend 1k $ on a camera right off the start.
Unless you are rich and have no other obligation.

I am still learning a lot about photography off my little point and shoot, and yes, I am quite limited.
But you have to admit some of my macro shots are almost as good as those from a 1k+ $ camera.

I have learned sooooooooo much so far about photography only, not having to deal much about the camera settings.
When I have $$ the timing will be great with better knowledge.

But discouraging a newcomer by saying he will so limited with a little camera, is not ideal imo.
What people need is to depend on knowledge and talent.
Not depend solely on equipment.

Just look at my first pictures I posted here and the ones i post now.
Same camera, much better quality.
Better knowledge.
All with the help of everyone on this forum only.

Only you guys can influence how a person will post and improve.
Let's make it a pleasant experience :)

Advantage of little point and shoot cameras: you can take them with you anywhere you go!!
you never know when the picture perfect opportunity will come :)

Macro picture with a point and shoot..
No cropping, no zooming, only a bit of saturation added...
One year ago, I would never have taken such a picture.
Thanks all!!

You're right, smaller cameras can be very good, and like any camera, it's more about personal skill than what features your camera comes with, but obviously full manual controls are useful when you wish to progress past a certain point.

The thing is though, you can pick up old DSLR's now for dirt cheap, Nikon D50's go for around £150 max for one in good condition with a kit lens, and something like that will serve you much better than a compact, because you won't have to upgrade your camera to progress.

Best way to make money with photography so (surprise surprise!) he can get more expensive equipment.
Even as an amateur photographer with a point n shooter he'd get money quicker than taking images of trees or scrubs or bugs.

Or you cold open a Gallery and sell large Luster, framed prints at $800-$1300 a piece.
You would sell more frequent than doing 3 weddings a month....

So you think that as a beginner he'd be taking pictures worth $800-$1300 with a point and shoot camera? How many people have the actual talent for that? Furthermore, those prices are largely dependent on location. On the other hand, people of every economic level get married. He can easily begin with the lowest incomes charging the lowest amounts and work his way up, even if he starts as a beginner. By the way, wedding retail/on-the-spot & studio photography sales > Gallery. My brother makes $250,000 a year just on these.

Lol, why is everyone here such a douchebag?

Hey man, seen you in the gfx forums. Here's my advice as a photographer of about three years: don't buy a 200 dollar camera. I know it's enticing because it's cheap and easy to start, but if you pay a little more money (there's a lot of cameras in the 350 range) you're going to get a good upgrade in quality as well.

Are you planning on using these shots for your own kind of "stock" images? If so, pay attention to the megapixels, as they're going to make a difference when you're using them on photoshop and such.

Here are some cameras I'd recommend:

@ the 350 range: Fujifilm FinePix F200EXR (great photo quality for a $350 camera, you'll be more than surprised at how crisp these photos are on your computer screen)

@ a christmas present (=P): Nikon D60 (fucking amazing camera, I love this thing, and a GREAT price)

Hope this helps somewhat!
