dunno much about how to use this 85mm lens its much more difficult than I thought. What sort of things other than portraits and sports is 85mm (136) good at shooting?

Well its great for concerts, especially on a cropped sensor, allso its pretty good for product shots, but not too small ones since you need macro lens for them. You should look at flickrs 85mm pool what kind of pics people have shooted with it

Though there are quite a lot of telephoto lenses with IS but there are still too few regular wide angle zoom lenses with that feature but I guess it's because most landscape photographers use tripods.
I am actually looking very hard at the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM and the EF 16-35 f/2.8 L lenses with the former having IS but not compatible with fullframe cameras and not weather sealed and the later having no IS...

I have totally forgot that you have that lens :o
Well it does seem to be a great lens and the photos you have posted in here are very sharp :) but I am trying to get as few EF-S lenses as possible because I want to buy a fullframe camera in the future (lol dreaming again).

I guess it really depends on what kind of pictures you want to take and if you are willing to bring a tripod with you where ever you go. As I said above IS is very common on telephoto lenses BUT the IS versions are usually a lot more expensive than the non-IS ones. I just have this weird habit of walking around trying to find interesting stuff to take pictures of but if I knew where exactly I would go and what I would take pictures of I would bring a tripod with me.

EDIT: btw I finally decided to spend some of the money I was saving for a new lens on a HP Photosmart printer ^^ it's nothing fancy but I will be able to scan photos taken with film cameras lol.

Imo you shouldnt worry about weather sealing on the lenses much if you dont have 1d series camera, since theyr only ones with real weather sealing. Imo u should buy used 5d if you want a full frame camera, they are soldpretty cheap now that the mkII came out. That 16-35mm lens is totally different than that 17-55 2.8, its L build quality, and way better in all areas, sharpness, contrast, colors, bokeh quality etc. On a full frame camera 16mm is REALLY wide angle and 35mm is wide allso, on cropped sensor 16mm is good for normal wide angle and 35mm bit over the "normal" focal lenght, so imo if you want wide to normal lens that 16-35mm is a great lens. That 16-35 is pretty expencive lens tho, and imo not worth the price unless you got a better camera(like 5d) and you dont have other things that you need to buy allso. I would suggest the 17-40mm f/4 instead, its about half the 16-35mm's price and a really good performer.

It's because wide angle lenses don't need IS. If you refer to Antichrist-'s post which as a rough guide it shows that the focal length of your lens in MM should be the same as or less then the shutterspeed you should use. So for a 300mm lens with no 'IS' you should be safe using 1/320th of a second. Now if we look at a wide angle lens such as the EF 17-40 f/4L USM we should be safe using 1/20-1/40th. I doubt that any landscape photographer will be shooting below 1/20th handheld. So really IS is a useless feature on wide-angle lens, methinks. :)

The reason why I want weather sealed lenses is that I am so sick of those stupid dust getting into my lenses. I have only two lenses and there are dust inside both of them. I think the 17-40 f/4 has too narrow maximum aperture for my needs that's why I am not so very interested in it but I still have several months to decide and look around lol. Well as I said I was dreaming again by hoping to get a fullframe camera but it will happen one day lol.

So you mean the focal length number on lenses could be used to determine the minimum exposure time by dividing focal length with ten when shooting handheld?
