But it doesn't make them look old, it just makes them look like someone's incapable of looking after their negs.

I think it's just a matter of personal taste or whatever.
I really like those scratches and noise in those photos taken by Chantal7 with a film camera (I hope you don't mind me posting a link to one of your pictures here tongue.gif ):

and I guess it's impossible to reproduce those kind of effects in PS on a picture taken with a digital slr.
