haha nah I don't usually approach people to take pictures of them I think I've only done that couple of times and only when they were not looking at my direction and my heart was beating like crazy when I did that too because I didn't want to get into trouble or anything. So most of the time when I take pics of people it would be like 6545456456 meters away and the fact that I don't have a telezoom lens made most of the pics crappy. It's different if you are with friends and take pics of them though but none of my friends are into that kind of "crazy" stuff lol and most of them are boring gamers :S
here are a few of my failed photos of people:
This guy's mother was standing not far away so I didn't really want her to see me taking a pic of her child because I do not want people to accuse me of being a sick pedo or something lol
I like to take pictures of kids. They are like cats, can never sit still and do random stuff all the time lol.

I intended to take a much closer portrait of the cleaning guy sitting on the ground wearing a crappy hat with some more well dressed people walking by him but when I walked by him he just gave me this weird look so I kinda got scared and walked far away to take this picture.

Gahhh, my reply didn't post >___<" Well, I'll just sum it up than lol

A great way of taking pics without people knowing is just selecting burst, pulling up the shutterspeed rather fast and walking by slowly and casually while taking pictures to the side of you lol. It's like a drive-by shooting but with photography xD Just make sure to disable the flash / other reveling options and don't look into the viewfinder, just hold it firmly down by your waist ^^ You'll most likely get a shot or two you like if the subject is good

Atleast this is how I've taken pictures of people in the past xD (dad taught me lol).
