ha doubt it :)

Hmm... the editing seems quite odd.. it's very flat in contrast and the child's skin is quite cold?

Same deal with that image.. flat in contrast and quite cold?

And congrats on the inquiries! Keep at it.. if you impress clients they will always refer you to others! Referrals are the most efficient way of advertising!

And in other news, I just finished my website. I basically scraped everything i've shot in the last ~8 years and started fresh, only images from late '12 and '13 haha

Matte  Im obsessed with it at the moment, Im really into the softness.

If anything it seems too warm to me >.< I dunno how we're always opposite when it comes to temp. Referrals are the only way Ive gotten any clients so far, lol. I tried doing some advertising on fb with the paid ads, and pretty much got nothing out of it. But from this session Ive had a lot of likes and interaction..shouldnt have wasted my money I guess -__-

Got it up?

This is a LIGHT/EXPOSURE/WHITEBALANCE problem!

The child was too far from the light source and it's underexposed. The background "bokeh" is also distracting.

I don't know if you can move the background but bring it really close and sit the kid closer to the light source or move it closer.

With the way I edit I prefer SOOC to be underexposed a bit, otherwise the highlights are too much. That was my only close-up like that, the rest are like the ones above. I really wanted to use my wood door for the background but the mom liked the damask D:

So does the unedited one seem really underexposed to everyone else? To me its just barely underexposed..I dunno if I have to recalibrate again or what.

Maybe BW is better for that one?

@jsp, get it together with these servers, damn.

I love the matt look too, but ill be honest, you're doin' it wrong. The light has to be right, it can't be flat!

Got what up?

With digital SLRs you should always push to the right, the recoverability of highlights is much greater and cleaner than pulling information from shadows, but this depends on the lighting too. I often push the histogram just before clipping on 255 in camera. There is never anything good hiding in the shadows of an underexposed digital image lol

It's under exposed and the light just wasn't right, it was too far from the source. BW will actually make it worse because the image is lit so flat, the only thing that can separate tonality is colour. Changing it to BW makes it a grey wash.

Well I shoot in my garage with the door either halfway open or all the way open depending on the light, backdrops and subject are about in the center of the garage. Any tips on best times to shoot?

Ha  I want to see the site though!

Wow really? That close and you can still recover the highlights? Seems like it would be kind of difficult and youd end up having to lower the exposure anyway.

Alright :( Well give me whatever tips you have for the light, if need be Ill take a picture of my garage and setup.

you dont use flash and other lighting sources other than natural light from outside??

also, i've learned a whole lot more from just reading a couple posts here, i think we definitely should set up a weekly photo assignment or something :)

Nope, lol. Strictly natural light, although I might look into getting some continuous lighting umbrellas sometime soon.

Id like that, but its just so dead here D: I mean, its not surprising because it is a gaming forum, still sucks though.

Well, there is something reflecting the light off a wall or the ground which is giving your images a nasty colour balance. The only way to overcome this and give reasonable results would be to use a flash with a large box of some sort.

Try using window light, with direct sun then without direct sun, check the difference. You will see the colour and quality of light will be much nicer.

I dont know what it could be, the backdrops are all dark tones and the floor around is gray. Strange.

Ive used window light, but I cant use that with clients..the garage is my only option for space since its so huge.

Very nice! I wish I could have a site like that, a little more cheery for me though  The home page photo really sets the mood. I looove how you just have to scroll to see the photos, and not click.

Also love aria, I tried shots like that wayyyy back when I first started, it was really difficult.

Well, there's something coming in that isn't quite right and the light you are getting is really flat. Invest in a flash and a big softbox.

Also, are you shooting in the morning?

Thanks, they are stills from a project my girlfriend and I worked on: http://vimeo.com/61258413

It was surprisingly easy to be honest, we practiced in our kitchen before we went into the studio, just a long exposure using the modelling lamp and using hand triggered flashes a few times (and a big of PS magic haha)

I have a flash, Ive never understood how to use it. Not to mention I lost the cord for the wireless triggers so its pretty much useless to me right now.

No, I try to shoot in the afternoon whenever possible. Even deep in the garage Ill get nasty shadows if I try shooting in the morning.

Ah nice. Your girlfriends name is Dasha? How elegant :s

Well it's pretty simple to use the flash off camera and I recommend getting the YONGNUO wireless flash triggers to start with, I have a set and they've never failed me.

Do you get direct sunlight in the garage? If so, try hanging up a large white sheet (semi-translucent) and diffuse it.

Nah, that's not my girlfriend, that's the dancer :)
