You yourself as the photographer just needs to feel that the picture is expressing something. Be it a mood, a facial expression, or even colors that gives the picture an expression.

I seriously do not have an abstract mind...
I had a hard time in chemistry and electric physics in college because of that....
If I see something or if I imagine something in a concrete manner, my brain works fine...
Abstract? doesn't work... I failed some college classes because of it and succeeded in others such as anatomy or biology..
If I see something or someone that feels would make a beautiful picture, it's fine...
I just cannot do it the other way around...
And I haven't come across anything yet that inspires 'expressions' to me

I didn't enter last contest either (motion) for the same reason....
