If you invest in a wireless triggering system such as Pocket Wizards, Skyports etc, then you can use just about any flash you can get your hands on.

I shoot with Olympus, but use Vivitar, Nikon, Alien Bee, Einstein and Oly flashes ... all at once or whenever the need arises. I got two SB28's for about $150. That's double the light than say one new SB at $200.

While the Oly flash can go on camera, it's been on my camera 2x in it's life. One was a wedding (where it was taken off for formals), the other was a silent auction event.

I encourage you to step out of natural light portraits, it opens up a whole new world. It is also one quality that differentiates a professional vs a weekend shooter imo. Start with one light and build it up.

That kind of encouragement gets me excited :)

I'm waiting until I see how much of a dint all my books this semester cost, and then I'll make my purchase. I'll probably pick up a Yongnuo 568ex and wireless trigger soon if everything looks good.

I ended up buying a Yongnuo RF-603. It works pretty well, especially consider the cost. The old canon flash I have is decent and while I do have to set everything manually, it works pretty well for the most part. Its nice being able to have the flash off camera too. I might pickup a gorilla pod with the flash adapter pretty soon so I can set it up wherever.

I've shot thousands of natural light shots, and I will continue to do so. But I've been going full-speed and been doing a lot.

I've found a lot of situations where flash would be very nice. While I can work around spots where I need flash, I'd like to be able to work through them as well :)

Have you considered LED panels or constant lighting?

That way you can actually see what the light is doing in real time and learn how to model lighting.
