you mean the beeping? thats in the menu somewhere. i'd recommend reading a little bit of the manual to understand all the modes and functions sometime after the new camera fun ;)

Nah I mean there's a light on the front that beams out and assists with the autofocus in dimmer settings. However, that's in the settings as well.

There's quite a few convenient automatic functions on the camera, but I haven't found HDR yet (which I will look in the manual to figure out). A lot of the settings aren't professional, but for quick vacation-type things where I don't fiddle with ISO and all that and I don't have time, the quick-settings are quite nice.

The camera's size is great too... it's light and small. The performance is on-par with a D7100 as far as IQ goes, but the price was just insanely lower.

I've decided I *definitely* want to pick up a fast prime in the $200-ish category. I just don't know what focal length is going to be best, and I *might* not know in time for vacation/etc, so theoretical input (and a bit of me using the camera) would be good. The 35 and 50 mm primes seem to be priced well for Nikon, not sure what else there is.

A lot of my shots are turning out blurring than they should be, but some are great. Seems I'm holding the camera fine. Any input??

are the shots motion blur or out of focus. what settings are you shooting at? is your object in motion as you are shooting? what are your lighting conditions like? are you shaking or moving the camera as you are shooting? are you even in focus?

from what it seems like, you are shooting in automatic and in low light causing motion blur because your object or you are moving during the shot.

then again just saying "halp my pictuz are blurzed" doesnt really give us anything to help you with.

Post some sample pics and list the settings you were shooting at. There are a couple reasons for blur which can be pretty easily diagnosed when you look at a shot and the settings that took it

I'm still learning how to use manual and set up everything to the correct settings to capture photos properly. I need to watch some instructional videos on it, do some reading, and get some practice in. So far almost everything has been auto. (Note most of the pictures I've taken thus far are just random and for testing out the camera... been busy with work).

I have different situations where things are blurry using auto everything (and I figure I should start learning manual)... but I'm still a tad bit confused. Here's one photo: http://oi42.tinypic.com/wk2szk.jpg (I reduced the size down to 30% or so, but no cropping or anything). I get a lot of photos like these with auto everything on, where the whole photo looks like crap. I hold the camera steady and everything. Really would think auto would be better?

Here's another photo that ended up not focused too well, and I'm not sure if it's just the low light noise and all that... flash was on... auto on... seemed to be point-focused... but still bad: http://oi44.tinypic.com/345215e.jpg

The same problems occurred on auto when trying to take pictures of a boat moving medium-speed at a medium distance in front of me at the beach, etc, etc.

Still portraits seem to turn out well in daylight, etc.

I have *A LOT* to learn, and I need to know my stuff before I can start really saying anything... but I just want to figure out what's going wrong so I know (when I get my manual settings figured out), where the auto is going wrong! Thanks.

All my terrible newbishness aside:

The 50mm 1.8G and 35mm 1.8G are both on sale for $30 off each. They're $220 a piece.

I'm thinking the 35mm might be good nifty-fifty equivalent on my crop sensor camera, and it would offer me some good low-light walk-around performance.

I haven't used my 16-85 enough to really see how often I'm at 35 and how often I'm at 50... so I'm not sure whether it's worth getting both, or what.

Every single other prime (anything lower than 35 and anything higher than 50) costs an arm and a leg and just isn't worth it for me. I could see myself wanting a wider prime for wide night shots, but as far as a further prime goes I think 50mm would cover the portrait shots (I think?!). Any further range would be during the daytime and I'd want a 70-300mm for that.

The question: should I pick up the 35mm 1.8G and 50mm 1.8G both now for $60 off together... or just get the 35mm and wait on the 50mm? Sale is just on for about 19 more hours.

I decided I'll pick up the 35mm 1.8G tomorrow as my first prime lens. It's a 52.5mm equivalent for full-frame, not taking into consideration shutter speed differences and all that... The reason why I chose this over the 50mm (85mm equivalent) is because it's going to offer more flexibility: Better for landscape shots at night, better for capturing more when on the go, etc. I think a 50mm makes sense though, which is why I still want one.

So the next lenses I'll be looking at are the 70-300 Tamron, 50mm 1.8G, and a macro lens. However, I am really on a budget at this point.

I can say with certainty that I'm glad I didn't get a full-frame. I'd have an upgrade path, but I'd already be spent out in terms of versatility hahaha. Plus tech changes so quickly that my budget and upgrades wouldn't keep up with the tech improvements if I had fullframe.

Now to prioritize actually using the camera over buying new shit!... what a concept.

I guess I need to take a lot more photos to figure out which lenses make the most sense to me. I think 35mm and 85mm on a crop body both make sense, with 50 being an awkward inbetween that I might not like (based on what I'm trying with my zoom lens). I'm thinking about primes that I'd want for every-day situations where I'd want nice bokeh, etc.

I'm still really liking the idea of a 70-300mm, and I really do want a prime that's better for low-light photography, bokeh, nicer photos in general, etc... the 35mm might make the most sense first.

I'm a portrait photographer, so personally I could live with a 35, 50, and 85 and be fine. I don't really care for zoom lenses. I even liked my 85mm 1.8 more than I liked my 70-200 L series.

As far as the 70-300 Tamron I'd do some more research on that. I had the Canon version. It was very slow on focus, the clarity was ugly, and it wasn't even kind of sharp after 200mm.
