I would say the Canon would do you pretty good for your first! I think it's a pretty decent cameras, I have seemed to hear a lot of people talking about the T3 ones. I prefer Canon as well.
You will find yourself wanting to buy lenses too, to get things - and honestly, they're worth every penny! I love all the lenses I bought and I wish I could get more. They are pricey though, for the good ones. I am sure you'll enjoy this part of photography and grow a lot from it!
For close up/zoom, yes, you will need lenses. Some lenses will allow you to zoom/get closer, but there are lenses out there that are specifically close up etc. For nature, a wide angle is really enjoyable to use as well. I use the Sigma 10-20mm and it works great (there's a Canon one for a lot more money). But I imagine you want to buy the camera first and focus on lenses later. Save up, you won't regret it

Good luck!

I started with Canon and still love my Canon!
Nikon is very good as well, so if someone says anything about one being better than the other, it's only a matter of preference..
The t3 is a very good introduction choice

Enjoy!
