I don't think there's one better than the other. It's really all a matter of opinion and what you like best, etc, what seems better for you.

I only know Canon, so that's why I chose it. I had used a small Canon camera before and liked it so I thought why not get a DSLR in the same brand.

I choose nikon because it is what most of my friends have and what i've played around with the most. So i already knew how it worked and how to use it.

consumer grade cameras: nikon
pro grade cameras: canon

my first camera was a d5000 (nikon) then a d7000 (nikon)
we had a d700 and a 5d mk ii when i used to work at a tech firm...

I voted Canon, but it's all the same. It's just a preference things. I started with Canon, switched to Nikon, then back to Canon.

dissagree with that, to me its a lot of hype ans status, they are different to the others and their glass certainly is great but i dont beleive they are "better" as a whole, good for some stuff worse for others

I pick Nikon because my first camera i bought was a Nikon F5 then a Fujifilm x100 for travel grab and go, and recently got Nikon D7000 because I already have Lens for Nikon and didn't feel like selling off my F5.

Canon. Simply because I first used my dads old Canon analogue camera and that way was indoctrinated.

If I was a firsttime user I would go for a Nikon camera.

My first "proper" camera is going to be a Nikon D3100 + the lens, so Nikon for now.
