The problem with Sony is they tend to be behind the game in the camera (DSLR) department and I wouldn't want to be stuck with Sony gear when everyone else pulls back ahead.  Then again it just depends on timing and preference.  Maybe he would like the mirror better and that would be a more suitable option at this time.

A77 shoots like 12fps, 24 mp, translucent mirror, 1080p 60fps video for only 1400.

edit the only problem with sony camera's is that the lenses aren't up to par with canon/nikon and they are inferior in low light.
