One tip that I personally do and I don't know if it's good/bad to do to pictures, but when there's a lot of white in the shot I go to Image>Adjustments>Selective Color and subtract some CMY from white. I also tend to adjust the neutrals if the picture has a lot gray tones.
So basically you take out some of the white color? Cool.

@ hating portraits!!!

I hate doing portraits also unless it's someone with their horse and I don't really have to direct them... otherwise people have fake smiles, doN't know how to position themselves and I don't know how to make them position themselves either...
As far as taking photos inside, I think without the whole umbrella or whatever setting, it's hard... I don't have such gear either and it discourages me from trying also.. I prefer outdoor shots like the last 2 you posted, people feel more at ease and you don't have to bother so much with the light and flash..
But for your 'studio' portrait, I think it's great other than the shadows.. can you delete them with the clone tool?
I totally get what you mean! Directing them isn't so bad, I guess I don't normally say much unless they look goofy or out of place. I prefer doing out door shots myself, like you said, I don't have the equip either and I rarely ever want to try portraits indoors because of that. Outside is so much better!

But only because it was pitch black outside, my family didn't want any 'serious' photos, and the fact that it's winter, I did not go outside.

I am sure there is a way to figure out the shadow issue. I think there could be many ways, haha.
