One tip that I personally do and I don't know if it's good/bad to do to pictures, but when there's a lot of white in the shot I go to Image>Adjustments>Selective Color and subtract some CMY from white. I also tend to adjust the neutrals if the picture has a lot gray tones.

Here are some other pictures I did of family a while back. (2009) I very much prefer to take them outside instead of inside. But still, there is always issues with my portraits

So I've been a noob since 2009!

I didn't edit these ones though.

So basically you take out some of the white color? Cool.

 @ hating portraits!!!
I hate doing portraits also unless it's someone with their horse and I don't really have to direct them... otherwise people have fake smiles, doN't know how to position themselves and I don't know how to make them position themselves either...
As far as taking photos inside, I think without the whole umbrella or whatever setting, it's hard... I don't have such gear either and it discourages me from trying also.. I prefer outdoor shots like the last 2 you posted, people feel more at ease and you don't have to bother so much with the light and flash..
But for your 'studio' portrait, I think it's great other than the shadows.. can you delete them with the clone tool?

I totally get what you mean! Directing them isn't so bad, I guess I don't normally say much unless they look goofy or out of place. I prefer doing out door shots myself, like you said, I don't have the equip either and I rarely ever want to try portraits indoors because of that. Outside is so much better! ^_^ But only because it was pitch black outside, my family didn't want any 'serious' photos, and the fact that it's winter, I did not go outside. I am sure there is a way to figure out the shadow issue. I think there could be many ways, haha.
