Not really an interesting  composition, as it has no clear focal point, rule of thirds seems to have been ignored, few leading lines; which are contradicting eachother, bad use of depth.

Regarding tonal values, it seems to be overexposed and lacking in detail. If you wish to see how to successfully work with tonal values, look up work of Ansel Adams (B&W photography as well), who works with such.

The lighting seems to be too strong, as if the photo is taken in the midday light, making it seem flat and not contributing to shadow quality.

Typical family vacation photo. Besides the african tribemembers of course :D .

one must take into consideration that this photograph may have been taken pre 1920

I don't see how that's relevant. I questioned the reasons why he wanted comments on it, but he didn't want to share, though he would still like comments. So he got them. No cameras at the time would be able to live up to the expectations I may have put up in my evaluation, but as the picture is observed today, it is still relevant in an observation of it's photographic properties.

It's like if you find $20 on the ground.. It's not that many money, but hey.. You just found $20 on the ground!

This is the kind of stuff I'm looking for. Thank you. This actually helps a lot.

Your photo is taken on film and digitalized using a scanner.
The quality is affected by it and there was no Photoshop used to get the perfect photo.
When you get your film developped, you get it straight from the camera, nothing changed, not even cropping or framing.
Everyone saying it's bad for those reasons have no idea about film photography, they all correct things in post processing.
I am curious as in what year exactly it was taken. It probably looks much better on paper than on a monitor...
I like it :)

Imo it's irrelevant whether it's film photography or not. What matters today is what it is up against.

You could also use advanced forms of ancient medicine, but it still wouldn't be good compared to today's standards.
