D3100 is fine. Since your girl doesn't know about photography, she will think its fantastic. by the time she knows enough to see it isnt OMFG amazing, it will be a while, and she wouldnt have expected for you to know since it took her months.

Anyways, some people quested the "limited" part in the last page..
If you buy a D3100, in 3 months from now, you'll be limited in the capabilities of the entry level PoS, and want a fuckin D7000.

Anyway, a d3100 will suit her needs fine.

It sounds like she is a half hearted beginner. Don't throw coin at something 50/50 haha
