I am reconsidering the 90mm TSE. I'm just talking to co-workers to justify the price and how often we will use the TS capabilities. I'm definitely going to get a Sigma 50mm 1.4 though.

Any reason? Like I mentioned before I need to be close to the subject to hold lights myself sometimes. I can't be standing on chairs while taking these shots.

light stands are like 30$ bro.

The bokeh / sharpness / the fact that your portraits will be shot above 80 mm (thus less distortion) are just a few reasons.

I ran into the being too far back problem with the 100mm f/2.8 at work. It's quite a hassle to have to have a tripod's height maxed out and standing on a chair every few seconds/minutes. I don't always have someone to help with lighting, so sometimes I end up holding lights while taking the photos. I could clip on lights, but that's also inconvenient when I'm adjusting the shot or have multiple plate shots. Also, I really don't have adequate lighting, so standing further back makes them even darker.

Also, regarding the TSE, what I mean about shooting on white is that I end up clipping the plate a lot and clipping a blurred edge plate isn't always the look I'm going for and takes time to do.

Any other lens suggestions that haven't been mentioned? Any light suggestions? I need something better to light the whole room and then I'll use other lights for more dramatic shadows.

You have a 3k budget.

Get light stands, they are so cheap.

Maybe get a light tent if you want to light it flat without much shadow.

You don't need to get flash either. You can use daylight or tungsten spot lights or flood lights. This will make it a lot easier when control spill and power on a small set. Barn doors and cutters work wonders on small sets.

Do a bit of research on the 90mm TSE in regards to food photography and still life. It is the prefered lens :)

You don't need IS in such a short range.

It's only 2.8 though :/

Nikon's 24-70 > Canon's

so people said with the 70-200 II's.

Canon embarrased Nikon there. I'm sure it will do the same on this second go.

Since I use my personal camera for work I think we're just going to get a new camera for work (not sure what yet. probably a canon t2i), so I don't have to use my personal one. We're getting the 50mm 1.4 as well. I'm pretty sure we're getting the 90mm TSE, which I'm very excited about.

Thanks everyone. I'll let you know what we end up getting if you're interested. I'll be sure to post up some pictures as well.
