the 55-200 is the same quality lens as the 18-55 that came with you camera. It is just a telephoto version of the 18-55. I recommend something with a f/2.8 or prime unless your on a strict budget that only fits the 55-250. I would save your money because the nikon 80-200 is just over 1k and seems fairly decent. Of course not as baller as the 70-200.

yeah the 80-200 f/2.8 is brilliant, and you should be able to get a used one for a steal

The only way that should be done is if you get the 80-200 with the af-s. The 3100 doesn't have an internal auto focus motor. The 80-200 with af-s is a couple hundred dollars more, plus it is more difficult to find used. It can be done though.
