The rule of thirds is a dumbed down version of it, pretty much.

Golden ratio is a much more aesthetically pleasing composition than thirds. It is the difference between Taco Bell and real mexican food.

Tell that to Leonardo Da Vinci. You're not supposed to get it exactly, but at least approach it- yours is way off. If you think the 1:1.61 point is al that matters, you forget the rest of the lines, which are also useful while progressing into other ratios.

edit: for example, hitting a better golden would've permitted the thirds ratio horizontal on the people automatically (and an almost perfect third on the ball), while those standing up would've been admidst the third AND fourth on the verticals at the same time.
