So basically have the color layer underneath a BW layer on overlay/soft light? Cuz I do that for some of my sports photo's lol. Gives you some sick contrast.

Pretty much bro

Open the first shot in raw. Push the fill light far right and drop the contrast right back. Open as a smart object, copy the layer. Open copied layer and push the fill light and drop the contrast, make it b&w and adjust the sliders accordingly. Open it and set to overlay.

Is that roughly how you do it?

what a dumb way to do a b@w converstion

It's not about the black and white conversion, it's about the tonal control by manipulating 2 raw images.

Well I had a "dave hill" phase a while ago and I tried a bunch of different methods to try and copy his style. I never used raw however, just stock images since I didn't have a camera.

One way was to duplicate the main pictures layer, set that layer to BW and overlay/soft light, then mess with the sliders.

I'll try it in raw and see how it turns out with some other pictures. I really like how yours turned out.

Hmm, the Dave Hill phase, I went through it too but I can't shoot like him! Don't bother trying to copy him in post because unless you shoot it right it will never work ;) haha

It's much better in raw, so much more control and flexibility. Smart Objects is the best thing since sliced bread.

Now what do smart objects have to do with photography? When I drag something from illustrator over to photoshop it becomes a smart object and is then resizable, but I'm not sure how to use them in photography.

If these are too many questions just pm me later lol.

Basically you can non-destructively edit an image in photoshop via the source (ie. camera raw)

This is a much better description:
