Ok thx, bought one today for 489€

got a 16gig mem card with it (ultra fast) and a backpack

what should be better?

at that focal range and on a cropped sensor. No zoom is better imo. But a 35mm 1.4 would be better again, not for many reasons but for its speed

laugh all you like despite being a slow cheap plastic lens, its better than most of the over priced crap the photography industry usually produce :D

it is prob the best kit lens, but really it is not that great
being plastic actually has its upsides
but being so slow makes it a bad choice

that said its it best for a starter

Hardly. Don't get me wrong, for a STATER KIT LENS, this is a great little lens. However, that is exactly what it is. A stater kit lens. Before you can claim that it is one of the sharpest lenses out there, first you actually need to know what you can compare it to. There are so many other lenses that are far superior, and not just "pro" lenses that cost $1.5k and up. The DX 35mm f/1.8 cannot be matched, especially for its price. It has a much faster auto focus which is also more quiet, it can be opened up around two f-stops more (which allows in MUCH more light), and it is significantly sharper. That lens can be purchased for under $200. Then there are the 50's. They have a 50 f/1.8, which is pretty much like the 35 when it comes to comparing it to the kit. Then they have two 50 f/1.4, one of them being the newer 50 f/1.4 G which blows away even the 35 f/1.8 and 50 f/1.8. That lens is right around $500. I'll stop there, continuing to list off 10 or more lenses seems like a waste of time.

Do I think this is a good kit lens, yes. Do I think it is one of the sharpest lenses on the market, god no.
