I dont think they look good either.

hdr makes everything look just..fake and dirty.

if you use the hdr function in photoshop yes. You can do 2 exposures and recover all exposure ranges perfectly manually, and it's still technically HDR, but less fake looking :D

number three with the first crop.
i don't like all the empty space in front of the whatever that is in the original photo.

i also prefer the first color of the second.

With higher contrast?
Lately I've been enjoying lower contrast bws for some of my portraits. I don't know what it is that draws me into them. But I prefer it over a high contrast on this image.

High contrast on a portrait usually is a bad thing, you don't want to expose a lot of the detail in a portrait. I guess there are some situations where you would..

I like the contrast in 3, it gives an "old look" which suits the photo pretty much.
