it is a marketing day, nothing else
Christmas is worse, a lot worse in that sense.
I think it's just a day to celebrate the relationship you have with someone, whether you buy something or not. The marketing came into play because they liked the idea of people buying stuff innocently for their loved ones, so they just produce mass amounts of it now so "everyone" will buy something. I guess I just don't think of it that way, I would celebrate the day with the feeling and wouldn't care about it being a day where markets make money.

What'd your bf get you?
I made my gf her own page on my website, which showed a link to movie tickets that we went to.
In the movies, I sat a HUGE teddy bear in the theater to be next to us while we watched movie. She had to carry it around all day, which was funny to watch.
Then we went to eat Italian food, where I had arranged a violinist to play while I recited a poem that I wrote to her.
Then I put on her a necklace that had the title of the poem engraved behind the pendant.
Then we went home.
yes, it was cheesy

I did not get anything for Valentines day but a supper, went skating, and watched a movie.

Aw, well at least you got to have some cake! Cake is always good for the soul.
