Ok - see if this helps you -

40D / 50D are very similar, the 50D is the new version of the 40D. The 40D is really a classic camera, and it was an awesome camera in its time. It still is a great camera, but the 50D is better. Neither have video.

60D - new version of the 50D but made of plastic instead of metal. A lot of people don't like this and have passed on the 60D all together. It does have video and a swivel screen (like on a camcorder).

550D - identical image quality to the 60D, but smaller and cheaper. It has video but no swivel LCD. The new T3i is basically a T2i (550D) with a swivel screen, but it's probably not in your price range.

If video is something you care about, Canon is ahead of Nikon in this department and I would go Canon.

If you want video go for a T1i or T2i if they are in your range.

Full HD movie recording
The EOS 500D combines exceptional still shooting with the ability to shoot Full HD (1080p) video. For occasions when larger amounts of footage need to be stored on a memory card, users can also choose to shoot at 720p or VGA resolution. An HDMI connection allows High Definition playback of footage and images on any HDTV.

and it cost £499.00 coming with 18-55mm 1:3,5

40D has video

btw I think a used 550D is still cheaper than a 40D and if he wants to record video as well the 550D is even better. Ofc 40D looks more "pro".
