It's alright for outdoor sports in broad daylight.. but anything else, you'll struggle to get high enough shutter speed.

It depends what type of sports the op is shooting just like antichrist- asked.

Also the 5DII isn't the best body for the job (not that it can't do it), just not as effectively as per say 50D/7D/1D

Have you compared the middle point in the 5d II's AF vs others? It is seriously owning the D700's whole AF system.

The center point is the only usable point for real AI servo action on the 5DII. The rest are subpar. But the algorithm on the 7D and the 1D series actually has better tracking abilities, not the mention the faster FPS needed for sports.
