I do photography for a hobby. My first camera was a point and shoot - and I realized that there were much better cameras out there that could do so much more things. I spent about 900 dollars on a DSLR (my first one, still using it). I absolutely love it. The only bad part is if you want good quality stuff, you're going to have to dish out some dough. But before you spend so much money on this stuff, get a very good knowledge of things and how they work. To be honest, I found DSLR's to be a much different camera than the point and shoot. There's just so much more stuff. Don't buy a DSLR if all you're going to do is use the auto-modes

But I really learned a lot from my camera, I love it. I could probably learn SO MUCH more with it, but I choose not to at this time. Good luck with your purchase, whichever you choose! I am not good at helping out with cameras to start off with, I'll leave that to the rest.
