I do photography for a hobby. My first camera was a point and shoot - and I realized that there were much better cameras out there that could do so much more things. I spent about 900 dollars on a DSLR (my first one, still using it). I absolutely love it. The only bad part is if you want good quality stuff, you're going to have to dish out some dough. But before you spend so much money on this stuff, get a very good knowledge of things and how they work. To be honest, I found DSLR's to be a much different camera than the point and shoot. There's just so much more stuff. Don't buy a DSLR if all you're going to do is use the auto-modes  :) But I really learned a lot from my camera, I love it. I could probably learn SO MUCH more with it, but I choose not to at this time. Good luck with your purchase, whichever you choose! I am not good at helping out with cameras to start off with, I'll leave that to the rest.

Photography goes like this for me.

Dropped 750 bucks on a Nikon D5000 18-55 and 55-200 VR.

Drop 200 on Nikon SB-400 flash.

Now want to buy a lens that cost more than all of that.

Make 0 bucks XD. Getting started is hard, gotta have a family friend or something to help you out like most businesses need people helping support and get the word out.

I recommend you go out and buy a Canon DSLR and a Canon lens.
Might be a little bit more expensive, but it's worth it, for sure. I bought one a couple of months ago, and it works fine and I love using it.

Canon EOS 550D has 18mp, gapless sensor, nice ISO range (that's usable up to 3200 without being too grainy), extremely fast focus, nice live view.

But you should get a D5000 if you want to save some money, if you want the best value for money camera on the market, get the 550D, seeing as it's a lightweight 7D essentially.

Here's a kind of hierarchy:
Canon EOS 550D - owns
Nikon D5000 - cheaper, but good
Nikon D90 - overpriced, dated
Canon EOS 500D - you'd regret not getting the 550.

Good luck mate!

D90 is hardly overpriced. D80 > D5000 just because its slightly older doesn't mean it isn't better.

I've only made a little bit, but it was small stuff, odd jobs for family and they gave me maybe 20 bucks.

Maybe she doesn't want to make money from it and only do it as a hobby, as stated above.
