Well I guess I can't avoid the light pollution, my only chance would be to find a very dark place.
There are town's lights behind that house and I can't turn them off :p
And it was ok to have a dark house too, I just wanted to enhance the stars.
I need to find a good balance for ISO, f/ and exposure time somehow.

For that scene, I would go f/9 or so, ISO 100, and see what your exposure time is. My guess is that your stars will blur due to movement. The house/ground however is not going to move, so I would take a long exposure to get decent exposure on the house. Then you can do a faster exposure to get one for the stars so they won't be blurry, and merge the two.

That same shot at f/9 ISO 100 will require an exposure time of 600seconds.. so 10 mins.. All he'll get is star trails.

He can use a bigger aperture and just shoot with hyperfocal distance.

That's why I suggested two exposures. There's no way to get good exposures on both without star trails.

I took this tonight, a shorter exposure time definitely helps alot. I used live view and zoom into 10x.. i found that zooming to infinity doesn't work and it's very blurry.. This is slightly away from infinity.

Below is EXIF data. I actually overexposed the shot by 2 stops.. I had to pull it back in Lightroom,

so f/1.4
2 seconds
ISO800

Or alternatively f/1.4, 1/2seconds, ISO3200.

I didn't have anything wider then 50mm so that was all i can do.

Hope it helped.

Woooow Eek, that's close to 100% what I wanted!

OFC your 5DmkII has like half the noise compared to my camera, but I think I can use ISO 400 and go for 4s or so.

And I will have to test zooming a while, since you said that zooming to infinite doesn't work.

Thanks a lot!

I think 4 seconds is a little too long. It may sound crazy, when i took a few shots before i nailed that one. On of the shots i took had a 5 second exposure and when viewing at 100% on my screen.. i notice a small trail :O

I don't think ISO1600 would hurt on your camera since you'll most likely have to pull it back in post (and that helps with noise too).

I left long exposure noise reduction on auto.. not sure how much it helped but meh

Also i notice i said zoomed to infinity.. it should be set focus to infinity. lol.
