I have used the 4/f and I really don't like losing that stop. However, it is only $700 for the non IS and like $1200 for the IS..

The Non-IS and the IS version have completely different optics. The IS version is way way way sharper then the Non-IS version.

This is true.

The f/2.8 IS mk II is arguably the best zoom lens ever made. I would love to have one.

At half the price, the f/4 IS is also an exceptional lens.

Under strictly controlled tests, it's sharper than even the 85 L II prime :\

My statement seems very out there, but I'm not the only one to have said it. It's an incredible lens.
