I used the 40D + 17-85 IS USM combo for quite awhile before upgrading to a better lens but I still have my almost 2 yr old 40D and it's really a great camera.
I think comparing it to the D80 isn't fair since D80 is quite inferior in most aspects. Maybe you should also take a look at the newer D90. Also I agree with the
others. A decent lens is far much better than a crappy lens plus a flash. If the 580EX is too much there is also the cheaper 430EX which is almost as good.

i would take the nikon and buy a used nikon 50mm pancake - MF but about £30 on eebay for one, super sharp.

the reason i say this is because the canon kit glass = poor, and you will soon spend more on new glass, you may as well start with a flash as that is one thing that does not need to be upgraded, and people that say you dont need a flashgun have not got one, they are great to try different things and inbuilt flash has no comparison!

Have to agree, go Canon... I have a Nikon and the Lenses are so damn expensive I haven't expanded my set at all -_-

Can't wait to get back on a Canon so I can actually buy some new lenses :D

uh you do know it's not the crappy 18-55 kit lens but the EF-s 17-85 IS f4-5.6 USM which is roughly equal to the Nikon 18-105 VR lens being sold as kit for D90.

meh
once I can afford a 200 f2L I will no longer consider myself noob anymore :D
It's all about gear
jk :p

Seriously though while making money off the hobby is a good thing or at least it means you are getting some returns of the money you have invested but
I think the most common photographers out there are wedding photographers and I for one can not imagine myself being one lol. I am pretty sure it would
be just like working as a waiter or a bartender or even worse
