I'm afraid he's right if you're going to go canon of course. There are others like a minolta for around the same price range but I have no experience with those brands. I would suggest saving up some money and getting a higher end entry level dslr to start. I started with a nikon d3000 and I'm regretting not waiting and saving up an extra 300 dollars for something like the d90 (mine cost 600 with kit lens, tripod, camera bag, cleaning kit, and one 8gb sd memory card on sale)

If you're looking for high quality don't expect to find much with a budget that low... you might as well just get a point and shooter

Your best choice would probably be a used camera. You can find good quality used camera's for a great price. Maybe something like a Canon EOS 400D or so is something for you :) . This is a great camera and with a versatile lense you can have a lot of fun with it.

Underwater photography is a different story though.. Costs a lot of money.

with that budget you can forget about the good image quality and dont even dream about having weather proofs also. i think the best you can get for that price is canon 350d(rebel xt in usa) with kit lens, used.

Actually, the Olympus E-1 can be had for $200 US - Although it's a 5MP camera, it will produce enough resolution than likely 9/10's of this forum's patrons will ever actually need - unless they are going pro. It also is weather-sealed and can be used in wet environments.

As a bonus Olympus cameras have the BEST out-of-the-camera jpegs vs any maker of camera - and particularly the E-1 has cult-like status due to its Kodak sensor and great JPG color. Do some research and you will see that the this is the general consensus at DP Review and among "pros" who use multi-platforms.

Of course if you wish to do a bunch of raw editing, then the newer cams are more well suited.

I'm shooting with an Olympus E-3 currently which has dropped to around 1k in price. I've paid for my E-3 10-15 times plus lenses and it keeps working fine, produces what websites, customers, etc. want and I've sold more prints than half of my friends who use the "latest and greatest" ...

If your style is more ... stop, steady, and compose the image vs the fly by the seat of your pants, shooting events, weddings, sports and high speed on demand stuff get an older cam vs a newer camera. But if you want a sweet deal on a low budget and fit criteria 1, you can't go wrong with the E-1.

Food for thought.

Thought provoking.

Out of the box.

Perhaps someone else here can speak up regarding a $2-300 cam that is weathersealed and produces great jpgs with minimal post production ... I don't know every brand's past line.

Of course if you wish to do a bunch of raw editing, then the newer cams with better DR are more well suited.

I'm trying to act like those Nikon zealots who swear on their life Canon is the worst brand in the world.
